The home is the foundation for lifelong learning.

It represents the one safe place where we can be totally self-directed as learners, exploring and discovering all the universe has to offer... a place where we can integrate that learning to improve the quality and duration of our lives.

The personal growth and enlightenment "curriculum" we gain outside of school and the workplace, in our homes... shapes us as individuals spiritually, intellectually, and physically. Unfortunately, we hardly ever acknowledge the home as the seat of our most enduring and significant learning environment

Developmental psychologists have long documented the impact of the home on early childhood development and early learning.  However, few acknowledge the impact of the home as the foundation for supporting ongoing personal growth and enrichment through adult lifelong learning habits.

The established educational system is limited to preparing the individual for further schooling and the workplace, rather than life as a whole. Even many adult education facilities have that orientation, so that often one thinks, "Why didn't they teach me this at school?" or "Where can I go to learn about this?" So many things one needs to know in life, or which could greatly enhance one's life, are not easily accessible.  Work and family obligations, finances, inconvenient scheduling, mobility and health issues present barriers to many individuals interested in "learning"; and while the advent of the internet has made much of this information available with a few keystrokes, many people are lost in its vast and chaotic space.

The following is a list of selected topics about which many people are inadequately informed and desire to know more - of their own volition and just for themselves.  These are topics as diverse as:  How to...

  • learn online
  • communicate effectively, including with partner, friends and family, at work and to groups of people
  • approach people and make friends
  • study effectively
  • exercise effectively
  • cook and eat well and get healthy
  • assert your rights and needs effectively
  • understand, control and channel one's emotions (and to teach your children to be emotionally literate)
  • handle shyness and improve self-esteem
  • continue to develop one's mental abilities and spiritual awareness
  • understand religious, philosophical, psychological and political ideas and develop an intelligent world view, free of cultural conditioning
  • research a topic on the Internet
  • manage one's personal finances or run a small business
  • make time, control stress and handle life's problems
  • be creative (paint, make music, write, etc as well as all kinds of projects that make a difference)
  • achieve the goals one envisions
  • help others and change conditions in the world for the better
  • handle loss and grief, when things go wrong, and upsets when relationships blow-up
  • bring up children to become loving, fulfilled and responsible adults
  • understand the persuasion and cultural/group influences, and how to retain an objective and independent view
  • research the truth about history and economics, from a global perspective
  • research the truth about activities and motives of government and corporate bodies, and human rights
